A tribute to My Dying Bride, inspired by every one of their songs. The song "The Raven and the Rose" was obviously the primary source of the idea for this image and the title, but every song fills me with the same emotional atmosphere of darkness and beauty. Whenever I hear or see the words "My Dying Bride", I get two very distinct images in my mind - one being the sharp-edged symbol from the CD art of Songs of Darkness, Words of Light and the other looking a lot like this - a raven, a rose and the darkness that sustains them. I would have incorporated the aforementioned symbol into this image but unfortunately, I have been unable to find a decent picture. If anyone knows where I can find one, please please, let me know - I think that would make a perfect tattoo for me. I hope I did them justice with this because all their albums have helped me through a lot of really dreadful hours and I owe them a lot for that. I find a deep sense of solace in My Dying Bride's music that I can't get many other places, so every note is of immeasurable value to me.
I had a bunch of other ideas for things to include in this image like the band's title logo, some lyrics or a moon among other things but, as usual, in the end I decided to keep it simple and stick with my original vision. Besides, any other imagery would have taken space away from the darkness and that's just not right... Half the time I spent on this was just fiddling with the color and lighting settings to try and get that perfect element of darkness I envisioned. I think I finally found it, or at least I got pretty damn close, so I really like how this came out. I guess this took me about 3-4 hours total - MDB albums spinning in the stereo the whole time.
Stock photos came from sources here at deviantART and from stock.xchng ([link]). I try to keep a pretty good record of where I get my source material from, so here's where everything came from specifically:
That's about all I can say right now - I'm too tired to think of anything inspired or clever to spit out at you - so, I'll wrap this by saying I hope everyone enjoys this. Please don't hesitate to leave comments and such, I always appreciate any responses I get. Now I'm going to finish listening to the last half of Trinity and then I'm off to my own private darkness in dreamland. Take care, friends.
UPDATED NOTES (11/24/2007): I never, ever expected this image to be so popular - it still amazes me how well this has been received by everyone, so 1st & foremost, thanks to everyone for all of that. Even my Dad loves this one - he had it printed on a t-shirt & gave 1 to me. I didn't have the heart to tell him that, with all the emotion that went into the creation of this image, it's not something I really want to walk around literally wearing on my sleeve. Still, I'm glad he, as well as all of you, have managed to take something away from this image. Looking back on this endeavor now, it really is less of a tribute to My Dying Bride (per se) & more of a general expression of sorrow & grief, inspired by and conveniently using the imagery & influence of MDB. I've thought about doing another MDB type image, using some of the symbolism from their latest album, A Line of Deathless Kings, but I haven't had the right inspiration yet - though the new song "Love's Intolerable Pain" has quickly become one of my favs from the band. Other favorites of mine include "My Wine in Silence", "Grace Unhearing", "The Cry of Mankind", "Black God", "The Crown of Sympathy", "Catherine Blake", "Your River", all the versions of "Sear Me", "The Stance of Evander Sinque", "The Isis Script", I could go on all day... How about you?
Up until now I had never heard of My Dying Bride, but after having seen this I'm certainly going to check them out. It wouldn't be the first time I've been turned on to great music here at dA. This is a marvelous piece of dark art. So dark, in fact, that I didn't notice the raven at first glance, which was rather unobservant of me given the title of the piece. I consider this to be a strong point, though, that one of the two title characters comes across as a subtle detail emerging from the shadows. The real star of this show is the rose. Its deep blood red color is muted somewhat by its dark shadows, giving it a slightly after-death starting-to-dry feel, as if its life has just begun to ebb away. The rose's color absolutely illuminates this piece, and it picks up the color of the blood running from the skulls orifices beautifully. You've created a creepy, terrifying atmosphere that I find compelling in the extreme. This would make a great jacket for a book of horror stories. Or perhaps a CD cover for My Dying Bride?
Thank you very much friend, I'm real glad you liked this. I think you found pretty much every effect and atmospheric element that I was aiming for, so it's good to know that all shines through. Thanks again
My, what can I say.. That's fucking brilliant, dear infernosilver.
You've done a good job of getting me intrigued, I must say. Do you know of any site where I can download or just listen to any of their songs? I looked up the lyrics to this "The Raven and the Rose", and I now feel like I must listen to their music because I never have, though I've heard of them.
I love your interpretation, but I have to hear the song in order to understand it better. Plus, they just seem like a band of esteem, and I greatly trust that your musical taste is similiar to mine.
And as always, I do not know how you managed this. It probably seems simple to you, but it's rather astounding to me, who can hardly pull together enough competence to roll out of bed in the morning.
Thank you, my friend, always glad to hear what you think of my stuff.
I tried to find some MP3s or other samples online for you to try out but I haven't been able to find very much. The band has a couple of one minute sample MP3s on their website here [link] I think they have a little piece of "The Raven and the Rose" there, among a couple others. If I should find some more in the future, I'd be glad to let you know.
And, to tell you the truth, it doesn't feel even the least bit simple - I'm just lucky that my computer is only a few feet away from my bed, so it's not a long crawl. Then I just tend to get lost in whatever I'm listening to and/or working on so it's usually just a matter of finding that balance between semi-productive trance and reflex creativity responses... if that makes any sense.
Thanks again for your comment, fav and everything else you've done for me. Good to hear from you again, as always. Take care
Thank you for looking, I did indeed listen to those.
I suppose in a sense I understand what you mean by "finding that balance between semi-productive trance and reflex creativity responses", though I've never quite experienced it that I can remember. I haven't quite reached that point, but I feel it may very well be near. ::sighs::
Ah. and I like your new avatar. What is the background? I'm sure it has a deeper history and meaning than I will understand..
